1. What drive size should I get?

Excellent question. Hands down, of all the clients we speak with, this is the most dizzying decision. You don’t want to get something that wouldn’t be useful, especially if you’re handing USB flash drives with your company or organization’s custom logo imprinted onto the side, only to find that most of the recipients of the piece run out of room on them easily. Look at this way.

On average, a single Mp3 is about 6MB (depending on song length and quality – this is an average). You could probably fit about 150 songs on a 1GB USB flash drive.

1 High resolution photo (5-8 megapixel camera) is about 2 MB so you can fit around 500 high resolution photographs.

As far as school, or coproate documents and files are concerned, to put it into perspective, one MS word file is usually around 25-50 KB so you can fit about 20,000 give or take a few thousand on a 1GB USB flash drive.

The best thing to do is to think about how the recipients of your promotional drives are going to be using these. If you’re handing them out a trade show, or including them in a grab bag, it might be prudent to assume that users would be doing a mix of personal and professional usage. After a month long internal client survey, we found most of our customers purchased 1GB drives and found them quite useful, and well received.

We also wanted to spotlight one of our recent clients, the Canadian Environmental Network (RCEN). We did a small run of USB Drives for their Annual General Assembly running October 24th-26th, 2008 in Toronto and we’re excited about our partnered association with them for the conference. This year’s topic at the AGA will be “Health & The Environment”, which will be addressed through a series of plenary workshops and presentations.

When it was established in 1977, the RCEN’s objective was to support and strengthen the participation of environmental non-government organizations (ENGOs) in their consultations with Environment Canada. Since then, the RCEN has strived to broaden its scope. Today it provides coordination, communication, research and networking services to more than 600 Canadian environmental groups affiliated through one of RCEN’s eleven regional networks.

The RCEN is an independent, non-partisan organization. It does not take positions on environmental issues. Rather, the RCEN actively encourages and supports those who take part in the public consultation processes, participate in working groups, or who are delegates to national and international conferences. More and more federal government departments favour the RCEN’s delegate selection process because it is transparent, bilingual, and supported by the environmental community for its unparalleled and effective voice for reaching policy makers.
